    Rome Meeting

Rome Meeting - “Science, uncertainty and decision making in the mitigation of natural risks”

    Where: Rome When: 8 - 10 October, 2014

Please note that information is still tentative and subject to modification

Workshop title: “Science, uncertainty and decision making in the mitigation of natural risks”

    Organizers: W.Aspinall, T.Bedford, J.C.Komorowski, A.Neri, M.Rosi

The aim of the workshop is to develop closer links and better understanding between scientists with expertise in natural hazards and civil authorities who need to take decisions and actions, under varying time scales, when these are informed by incomplete scientific theory or uncertain data (usually both). The workshop will illustrate, based on past experience and test-cases, the present state of knowledge and main challenges in forecasting the dynamics and hazards of natural phenomena and assessing associated risks under uncertainty. A prime focus will be the challenges posed by explosive volcanoes to highly urbanized territories, the present state of procedures and protocols for decision-making in the face of major uncertainty and current good-practice. Attention will be also given to the specific expectations, roles and responsibilities of scientists and authorities, and to how these contribute to the actions needed for robust, effective, and defensible management of natural dangers. Most of the talks will be by invitation but part of the workshop will be open to contributions on the workshop theme and for networking activities.

The workshop and meeting are part of the COST Action “Expert Judgment Network: Bridging the Gap Between Scientific Uncertainty and Evidence-Based Decision Making” and are organized by the Dipartimento della Protezione Civile, the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia and the University of Strathclyde.
